천경우(b.1969)는 사람들의 다양한 경험을 사진에 담는 작가다.
작가는 질문한다. 사진은 단 하나의 짧은 순간만 담을 수 있을까? 어떤 일을 해 나가는 과정을 긴 한순간으로 기록할 수 있지 않을까?
〈의지하거나 의지되거나〉는 두 사람이 마음을 나누는 시간을 담은 퍼포먼스이자 사진 작품이다. 18명의 노년기 여성이 참여했다. 이를 위해 9명의 여성들은 돌봐 주고 싶거나 기대고 싶은 오랜 친구와 함께 초대되었다.
두 사람은 손을 마주 잡고 서로를 바라보는 침묵의 시간을 가졌다. 작가는 이 순간에 집중했다. 3대의 카메라가 두 사람 사이에 마음이 이어지는 모습을 동시에 기록하여 사진으로 담았다.

천경우는 다양한 문화권에서 실험적인 사진작품과 대중이 능동적으로 참여하는 퍼포먼스, 영상, 설치, 공공미술 작품 활동을 하고 있다. 결정적 순간의 포착이라는 사진의 전통적 개념에 의문을 갖고, 수행적 과정을 바탕으로 한 ‘소통과 경험의 과정’을 담은 사진의 새로운 가능성을 구체화해왔으며, 주요한 작품으로는 사진 연작 〈Believing is Seeing〉(2007), 〈Versus〉(2007), 〈Thousands〉(2007-2008)와 〈Being a Queen〉(2007), 〈The Weight〉(2016), 〈Resonance〉(2023) 등이 있다. 캐나다 국립 미술관, 네덜란드 사진미술관 하위스 마르세유, 프랑스 막발 현대미술관, 미국 LA 카운티미술관, 덴마크 브란즈 사진미술관, 폴란드 라즈니아 현대미술관과 국내 국립현대미술관, 서울시립미술관, 뮤지엄 한미 등에 작품이 소장되어 있다.

To Lean or Be Leaned Upon is both a performance and photographic work that documents a shared moment of intimacy between two individuals. Eighteen senior women participated, nine of whom were long-time friends whom the others wished to care for or lean on.

Chun creates experimental photography, performance, video, installation, and public art across diverse cultural contexts. Challenging the traditional notion of photography as the capture of decisive moments, he explores new possibilities grounded in performative processes and participatory communication. His major works include the photographic series Believing is Seeing (2007), Versus (2007), Thousands (2007–2008), as well as Being a Queen (2007), The Weight (2016), and Resonance (2023). His work is held in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada, Huis Marseille (Netherlands), MAC VAL (France), LACMA (USA), Brands Museum of Photographic Art (Denmark), Łaźnia Centre for Contemporary Art (Poland), and in Korea at MMCA, Seoul Museum of Art, and Museum Hanmi.
