이 연구에는 여러 사람이 함께했다. 데이비드 기슨과 다른 건축가, 지리학자, 시각장애가 있는 작가 등이 모였다. 이들은 장애인에게 어떤 공간이 필요한지 고민했다. 장애인이 혼자서 살지, 함께 모여 살지 선택할 수 있도록 하기 위해서다.

David Gissen (b.1969) is an architect who reimagines the built environment through the perspectives of disability. As a wheelchair and prosthesis user, his work foregrounds the lived experience of navigating space differently.

Block Party: From Independent Living to Disability Communalism presents a collaborative investigation centered on the Berkeley area in California, a historic site of disability activism.

The project brings together architects, geographers, blind and visually impaired writers, and Gissen himself to explore how space can support both autonomous living and collective forms of life among disabled communities. Rather than privileging standard notions of accessibility, the team asked what kinds of environments are necessary for disabled people to live not only independently, but also interdependently.

The work is composed of comics, architectural models, and recorded conversations—materials that invite tactile, visual, and auditory engagement. Through multiple forms of access, it proposes a radically inclusive vision of spatial justice.
